Researcher Elizabeth Devore from Brighamand women's Hospital, Boston, said, "our findings support the idea that extreme periods of sleeping and changes in sleep duration over time can lead to a decline in cognitive and changes of Alzheimer's in older adults.
"The public health Implications of these findings can be great, because they may lead to the identification of the end of sleep-based strategies to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's and cognitive disorders."
A spokesperson for the Alzheimer's Societyadded, "a good night's sleep is one of the pleasures of life, but, again, this is a strong study shows that the quality and duration of sleep is also linked to our cognitive health.
